In this 1956 picture, Vice-Admiral Sir Geoffrey Robson KBE CB DSO RN watches as Cadets lower a 27-foot whaler in radial davits during an “abandon ship” exercise. Captain G. V. Legassick the Captain-Superintendent also observes – with a view to future critical comment. When the whaler was slipped, the Cadets manning the boat-rope energetically hauled its bow to starboard and out towards the entrance of the boatpen. By the time the boatrope was slipped and the oars shipped, it was moving at an impressive speed toward other boats moored in the harbour.
