From the Newslatter…..

On the subject of Face Book, I again encourage all members to join our Face Book page. One does not need to be active on Face Book to be able to read our GBOBA page. There are many items of interest that I post there that I repeat in our newsletters for the benefit of those that do not have a computer or smart phone to access our Face Book page, thus my apology to those who do read our Face Book for the duplication. But, not everything I post on Face Book makes its way to this quarterly publication. Solution? Join us on Face Book.

Morning
Sad to announce the passing of my dad, Joe Brownless yesterday morning, 15 June. He passed peacefully in his room at the Green Pastures old age home. He was 89Y of age.
We are planning a memorial on Saturday 20 June outside Durbanville – same to still be confirmed.
I trust a suitable obituary will be posted for possibly the last south African with square rig endorsement.
Many thanks
Gary Brownless

A Brief History
First General Botha Cadet to join the s.v. Lawhill, serving some years on her as Cadet. Then joined a Danish tanker “Ingemersk” as 4th and then 3rd Officer, this being run by the then S.A.R.& H. Wrote Second Officer’s Certificate at the Hull Trinity College in England and further study obtained a square sail endorsement. Sailed as Second Officer on a Polish Ship around the Eastern U.K. Coast and to Europe. Later treturned to South Africa and sailed on various ships run by the S.A.R. & H. Failed his eyesight test when applying to write Chief Officer’ Certificate, so came ashore and became a toolmaker with the Railways. Studied further and became a Factory Engineer. 2006 Retired.

Our S.A.T.S. General Botha exhibit in the S.A. Naval Museum, Simon’s Town, is finally open to
the public. The temporary [albeit lengthy] closure as a result of other work being done in the
museum has finally been completed and thus allowing public access to our exhibit in the same
wing of the museum. During the renovations three class photographs somehow went AWOL.
These have subsequently been replaced and the museum staff shall mount them in their correct
places when time permits.

The Reunion

A group of Bothy Old Boys, all aged 40, discussed where they should meet for a reunion lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Wetherspoons in Uxbridge because the waitresses had big breasts and wore mini-skirts.

Ten years later, at age 50, the friends once again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Wetherspoons in Uxbridge because the food and service was good and the beer selection was excellent.

1971 Hit Video

The video below was released in 2011 to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1971 intake at Bothy. Copies of the DVD were given to each of the 1971 cadets, but unfortunately, due to financial constraints, we could not make the video available to a wider audience.

However, through advances in technology and internet hosting, we are able to bring this long-awaited release to the masses at a price everyone can afford – NOTHING!….

So enjoy and remember that you saw it here first!!!…………

Hi All,
Check out www.MarineInspirations.org. This is our latest venture in mentoring disadvantaged kids from SA. The Website tells it all and we have two kids coming over to sail with us in the Ibiza Rendezvous Regatta in October. We are all pretty excited that it has worked out so well and so fast and that flights and expenses are all sponsored and everything is up and running.
Cheers – Phil
